Early Bird First Aid is an award-winning local business, which specialises in teaching parents and childcare workers vital first aid skills. They run monthly courses at Gracelands Yard, Kensal Rise (next course 7 May, see below for details), as well as private courses for groups of 4+.

Sarah Kohn founded the company in 2012 and has two small children of her own. She says: “I honestly believe that basic first aid skills are essential for anyone looking after children. They should be as much a part of becoming a parent as attending antenatal classes or an NCT course”.

When Sarah’s first son was 7 months old he choked on a piece of apple, thankfully as a trained first aid instructor, she knew exactly what to do and dealt with the problem instantly. She would like to see all parents learn these essential skills; unfortunately about 40% of parents are likely to see a baby or child choking at some point and yet only around 10% actually know what to do.

So what should you do if this happens to your baby or young child? Sarah takes us through the choking management procedure:

“Babies and young children can choke on small objects such as marbles, grapes or small toys. To help prevent choking:

• Keep small objects out of the reach of small children
• Cut round food items (grapes etc), in half, for babies and small children
• Choose food and toys that are suitable for the age of your baby or child
• Don’t give babies or small children snacks in the car
• Encourage older children to keep their toys away from your baby

What to do (for babies)

  1. imageLook in the baby’s mouth and carefully remove any visible objects. Do not feel blindly down throat.
  2. Position baby face down on forearm supporting head and neck with your hand
  3. With the infant’s head slightly lower than body deliver up to 5 firm back blows between shoulder blades with heel of hand.”

You can learn more about managing choking incidents, and much more on a Early Bird First Aid course. Next dates at Gracelands Yard, Kensal Rise: Saturday 7 May , 10.30am-1.30pm, cost £50.
