A small school with big ideas…

Most parents in and around Queen’s Park will have heard of Maple Walk School – a small but perfectly formed ‘low fee’ independent school based in nearby Harlesden.  But we’ve learned that there is so much more to this popular school than meets the eye – and we want to tell you more about it…

The school has come a long way since the early days in 2004 when it consisted of one room in Ladbroke Grove and a grand total of 2 pupils and 1 teacher.  The school now sits in its own purpose built building (full of eco credentials), educating approximately 200 children from Reception through to Year 6 – and has achieved a place in the coveted ‘Good Schools Guide’.  It has also been voted one of the Telegraph newspaper’s ‘Top 10 Best Value Prep Schools in the country’, which the school is immensely proud of.

Parents appear to have embraced Maple Walk due its high academic and sporting achievements, but also for its community feel – with a great number of pupils attending from our very own Queen’s Park and Kensal Rise, and more recently from Willesden Green, Notting Hill, Maida Vale and Harlesden.

Although Maple Walk is a relatively new school, it’s successes have climbed steadily throughout the years – with recent secondary school offers coming from the likes of Channing, Camden Girls, Francis Holland, Highgate and St Pauls in the Independent sector and West London Free, Camden School for Girls and Holland Park in the comprehensive sector – to name but a few.

In addition to the usual subjects studied in the curriculum, French is taught from Reception, Latin from Year 6 and the key core subjects are streamed by level of ability throughout the school. From Year 3 upwards, pupils are prepped for the next stage of their schooling to give them the best chance of gaining their preferred choice of secondary school.

Sporting participation is also high on the agenda at Maple Walk, and beautiful nearby Roundwood Park is used on a regular basis by children from year 2 upwards – whatever the weather!  The sporting achievements of Maple Walk can be seen through their selection to represent Brent in the London Youth Games, and becoming medal winners in the ISA Girls Football Tournament and county Cross Country – impressive!

Both the academic and sporting accolades sound like a big feat for a small school in Harlesden, but it would seem that the happy and accomplished children are a testament to the way the school is run, the low turnover of staff (one member has been there for thirteen years!) and its nurturing environment “I have been at Maple Walk for six years.  It’s a small, happy school, full of creativity and fun – I love it here!” says Gill Sinclair, a current Year 5 teacher.

Maple Walk is considered as the ‘affordable private option’ with its fees being lower than many of the nearby independent schools with each penny used to continually improve the school.  To help with those special little extras however, we’re told The Friends of Maple Walk do a great job of raising funds, with their efforts including the running of the annual art week, the Christmas Fair, Queen’s Park Day bake sale, a sports day BBQ and the big annual social fundraising event.

We’ve really enjoyed learning all about Maple Walk School, and we hope you have too. We’ll leave you with a beautiful video round up of the school (click the link in the image below), and a final word from headteacher Mrs Gillam, “I want children to enjoy coming to school and be excited to learn about the world around them.  I hope that all children leave here confident, with a measure of success they can call their own  and with an excellent work ethic ready for the next phase of their education.”
